Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in
green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He
guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no
evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my
head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely, goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 NIV
"For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through
our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or
asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and
build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."
Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV
The Armour of God
"... Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour
of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our
struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the
authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual
forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Therefore, put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil
comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done
everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round
your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your
feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In
addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can
extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of
salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and
requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the
saints."
Hebrews 2:7-8a NIV
"You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and
honour and put everything under his feet. In putting everything under him,
God left nothing that is not subject to him."
Ephesians 2:1-6 NIV
Made Alive in Christ
"As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you
used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of
the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are
disobedient.
All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our
sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were
by nature objects of wrath.
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us
alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace
you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him
in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus."
Hebrews 4:12 NIV
"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged
sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it
judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
1 Corinthians 14:1-3 NIV
Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues
"Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the
gift of prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men
but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his
spirit. But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening,
encouragement and comfort."
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 NIV
The God of All Comfort
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles,
so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves
have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into
our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are
distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is
for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same
sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that
just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort"
1 Thessalonians 5:4-11 New Living Translation
"But you aren’t in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters,
and you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief. For
you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to
darkness and night. So, be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay
alert and be clearheaded. Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers
get drunk. But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the
armour of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our
salvation.
For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his
anger on us. Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when
he returns, we can live with him forever. So encourage each other and build
each other up, just as you are already doing."
